Baseload PPA and Energy Storage
Baseload PPAs are the future for large scale solar energy. How will they be valued in the future and can profile and volume risks be mitigated using Energy Storage?
Master Thesis Idea
The Energy market is filled with different kinds of PPAs - Power Purchase Agreements. A PPA is a contractual agreement between energy buyers and sellers. In short, it's the way companies sell and buy energy from renewable sources.
The currently most common kind of PPA for Solar is PAP - Pay as Produced. It means that the buyer buys any energy that the solar park produces and at the time that it is produced.
Another form of PPA is Baseload where the buyer agrees to buy a determined volume of energy for every hour over the year. Profile and volume risks the sit with the seller, because they have to deliver the agreed energy no matter what. If there’s low production and the seller cannot meet its obligations through its plant, the agreed volume will be sourced from the spot market. Baseload PPAs becomes more and more common as an Energy market matures.
Our thesis idea is to look at the valuation of Baseload PPAs. How is the pricing determined? And then to look forward into how Energy Storage might mitigate the profile and volume risks.
